Alumnae News |
His former colleague and friend, Janet Johnston, who worked alongside him for many years as a Biology teacher, has kindly written this obituary about the popular teacher who served under three Head Mistresses (Miss Smalley, Miss Candy and Mrs Low).
“Mike Crewe joined the Science Department in 1979 to teach Physics throughout the School. The Head of Department at this time was Mary Haynes, known to be very meticulous about how Physics should be taught and very strict with everyone, including staff.
Mike had a very distinct style of teaching as he wove humour into his lessons. However, his interest in Physics and his friendly, but firm, approach won her respect, and they got on well during her time at School.
Mike as also the first permanent, full time, male member of staff. There were some male teachers in the Maths, Music and Art Departments, but they were part-time or temporary. Mike adjusted well to being the only man among so many females and thought nothing of it. Likewise, he was accepted without any problems. He set the tone for all the male teachers that were to follow, and gradually more male staff were appointed. Mike stayed at the school for over 30 years and made a real contribution to school life.
While at LEH he became very involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, helping run it for nearly 20 years. A large number of pupils in the Upper Five did the bronze award and then other girls in the Upper and Lower Sixth went to further success. Some girls even got a gold award, which was a considerable achievement.
Mike was presented to the late Duke of Edinburgh at an award ceremony in London. He spoke to Mike and thanked him. It was a tough and challenging outdoor activity involving navigation and map-reading skills, hiking over different terrains, camping out in all weathers, cooking and carrying all equipment. It was a well-earned qualification.
Over the years Mike showed himself to be a good sport. He would always perform in the Upper Sixth panto and once even shared his beard off for charity!
Many alumnae will remember Mr Crewe with affection. Smartly dressed, grey hair and beard, pair of specs and always a sense of fun and he had a real love of Physics.”
We send heartfelt condolences to his family on behalf of the whole LEH community.
