Believe That All Things Are Possible

Last term we bid a fond farewell to Lisa Garcia, Head of RS and Philosophy, after 14 years. She will be much missed by former colleagues and pupils alike. We asked her to reflect on her time at LEH.

What are you planning to do next?
I am starting a new role as a Housemistress at Wycombe Abbey. I’m moving to Wycombe this summer together with my husband and our new rescue puppy Coco.

What has been the highlight of your time at LEH?
It is almost impossible to give a specific highlight, but I have to say the standout highlight of my time at LEH is absolutely teaching the wonderful girls here. LEH students make teaching so easy and fun. I am fortunate enough to not only teach a subject I love but one that also invites such interesting discussions. It gives me the opportunity to really get to know the girls, how they think and what issues are important to them.

Do you have any favourite anecdotes/memories of your time at LEH?
Some of my favourite memories of LEH will be the many trips abroad and having the chance to enjoy life and adventures with students and colleagues. The Sixth Form panto has also been a great highlight, I am not sure how, but I managed to keep my role in the 'young teacher' crowd for at least a decade! Another favourite of mine is ‘cake Thursday’ which many of my GCSE and A Level classes participated in by creating a cake rota to bring in goodies for our lessons. My personal favourite has to be Colin the caterpillar.

What makes the school so special?
LEH has often been described as a magical place. This is something that I can absolutely attest to. It is difficult to put your finger on exactly what gives LEH that feeling of magic, but I imagine it is the combination of quirky traditions, bright and interesting students, caring colleagues and of course the carpet on the walls.

What will be your abiding memory of LEH?
I will always remember LEH as a place to call home. I will remember walking down the corridors and hearing girls playing games in their form rooms, coming into assembly listening to beautiful singing or music by one of the many talented music scholars and the feeling at the end of each summer term that all the hard work has been worth it.

What has teaching at LEH taught you?
Teaching at LEH has taught me to dream big, to be brave and to believe that all things are possible.

What’s your message for pupils/alumnae?
My final message is one of thanks. To every girl I have taught over the last 14 years, it has been such a privilege. Thank you for your trust, for being so interested and keen to learn and for being so kind. Thank you also for inspiring me to be brave and to take up new adventures. And finally thank you for being so much fun along the way.
