Maureen Sharman 1933-2021

We were very sad to learn that 87-year-old Margaret Sharman (nee Denham), Class of 1949, who was a dear friend of LEH, has passed away after contracting COVID-19 while in hospital.

Maureen was not only the Secretary of the Holly Club for many years but also a Governor of the School in the 1980s and 90s. Her daughter Wendy Smith (nee Sharman), Class of 1979, also attended LEH.

Current Alumnae Advisory Group member Jane Ross, Class of 1964, says: “Maureen really was a charming, lovely person. She inaugurated and used to organise the cheese and wine summer Holly Club events in the 70s, more-or-less single-handedly. She was a wonderful hostess. It was a pleasure to be on the Committee as she used to hold meetings at her home and feed us lovely suppers.”

Fellow AAG member Gillian Keller, class of 1970, said: “I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Maureen. I have known her since 1978 when I first joined the Holly Club Committee and we used to meet in each other’s houses before we then started meeting in school. I remember that she always smiled. My thoughts are with her family at this sad time.”

And AAG member and former Deputy Head Trish White, class of 1955, also paid tribute, explaining that even after she left the Holly Club Committee, Maureen liked to keep up with school news and was a regular guest at alumnae events including the reunion lunches and the Christmas Services at St. Giles.  She recalls: “Maureen was the “pin-up” girl for the Hampton boys when she was in the UV and VIth. She was such a kind and caring person, too, and so dedicated to LEH.  We will miss her very much.”

The AAG, the Alumnae team and the LEH community are all very grateful for everything Maureen did for the school and join us in sending our very best wishes and sincere condolences to Wendy and her family at this sad time.
